The Building

Palazzo Circolone

Palazzo Circolone was built on ancient shops bought in the second half of the 18th century by the merchant Francesco Circolone from Maglie, originally from Mola di Bari.

It is the first of several palaces built in Poggiardo between the 19th and 20th centuries by the wealthy and enterprising heirs of the family. First home to Giuseppe Circolone and his wife Maria Teresa Alba, it later became the residence of Giovanni Circolone (1808 – 1859), lawyer and mayor of Poggiardo, a brave supporter of the Unification of Italy, exiled to Corfu. Other mayors of the Circolone family lived there too: Oronzo, Antonio and Gennaro.

The recent renovation transformed the ground-floor service rooms, where a restaurant hall and a bar were set up in the entrance courtyard. Part of the garden was used to create the pool, leaving the existing orange grove untouched. On the first floor there is a large hall where you can admire a great fresco depicting the goddess Aurora; other rooms feature frescoes depicting the Toilette of Venus, the putti, better known as the Cherubs, and some floral motifs.
